About This Place

Welcome to the iconic world of Steak 'n Shake, a beloved American hamburger restaurant that has been delighting taste buds for decades. Located at 290 S Randall Rd, Elgin, IL, this establishment offers a nostalgic experience intertwined with some fresh culinary innovations. A destination where classic meets contemporary, Steak 'n Shake has redefined its offerings, attracting both long-time fans and newcomers alike.

From their signature garlic butter burger to the mouthwatering milkshakes, each dish is crafted with care. Customers have noted a remarkable improvement in food quality since the switch to beef tallow, elevating the flavors to a level that surprises even the most skeptical long-time patrons. The ambiance reflects a family-friendly vibe, though some visitors have shared that the experience can be a bit affected by the modern ordering system via kiosks, which can feel less personal than traditional methods.

While opinions on the atmosphere vary—some mentioning a lingering grill smoke inside—the consensus is clear: the food maintains its delicious legacy. As Joshua Washburn put it, “the food was delicious,” a sentiment echoed by others who are excited to see Steak 'n Shake thriving once again.

For those who cherish a trip down memory lane, this restaurant has retained much of its nostalgic charm, with offerings nearly unchanged over the past two decades. Families find joy watching the next generation relish in the same flavors that have delighted them. However, be prepared for a slight shift in service dynamics; ordering may take a bit longer, yet many agree that the staff remains friendly and accommodating.

If you’re in the mood for a classic American burger experience combined with modern efficiency, Steak 'n Shake is definitely worth a visit. With a commitment to quality and a nod to tradition, it invites you to indulge in its hearty offerings that will leave you craving more.

The experience is not as good when you order on a screen. It just seems less personal to me. We ate outside because there was so much smoke in the dining area from the grills. The food was delicious. I will definitely go back to Steak and Shake, but I probably won't visit this location again due to the smoke. The staff were nice, but overall this location seems like it could use some attention.

Okay so hear me out. I grew up going to Steak ‘n Shake in the 2000’s was pretty sub par but I went again for the first time in over Decade and all I have to say is….. wow. I’m honestly shocked at not only how good the food is now since they switched to beef tallow but how tentative and nice the service was. For being a chain fast good joint, I’m impressed. 10/10 woke recommend. Bonus points for the garlic butter burger *blows chefs kiss *

I grew up going to steak n shake. The food hasn't changed much. You have to order at the kiosk. If you b order a drink save your receipt. You need to scan it to get your drink. Different. Everything is almost the same as 20 years ago. My kids loved it! Getting the order was a little slow.
